SISYPHUS 2012
January 10, 2012
In Greek mythology Sisyphus (/’sɪsəfəs/; Greek: Σίσυφος, Sísyphos) was a king punished by being compelled to roll an immense boulder up a hill, only to watch it roll back down, and to repeat this throughout eternity. (Wikipedia)
Are things actually changing or do we just repeat ourselves over and over while time passes?
A new year started – 2012 – and we are all full of hope and expectations. Last year was good to us so we feel like things are turning around and new opportunities will show up on the horizon.
Like most of us I have stopped making resolutions for the New Year, though – who wants the pressure, right? But what I like to do is look back and see what the previous year has brought and how I like(d) it and what I would like to have more of in the next year to come.
This time around I got some additional inspiration from our business coach Martha Carnahan: She suggests to pick a theme for the new year instead of making “resolutions”.
(You can read all about it in her article “Resolutions schmezolutions!” – http://www.brilliantvisions.net/resolutions-schmezolutions).
That sounds smart to me. It is not aimed at changing your behavior completely (which most resolutions do) but gives you the set-up to evaluate what you currently do for a better outcome. Less pressure, more opportunity.
My goal for this year is to try to evaluate more often if things that I do are an actual choice or a reaction to something I think “needs” to be done. We have gone through a few years where we had to react to needs – just to make it in this economy – and not so many liberties. But to keep rolling the boulder up the hill does not necessarily make for a job well done – just a hard job.
In 2012 I want my theme to be JUNCTION or “the road more fun traveling”.
We’ll see how it goes. I’ll send you a post-card from the road
